Saving a quiz and choosing updates should be separate decisions

You may want an emailed copy of a quiz without wanting ongoing updates. In the checked DomDNA preview, the saving choice and the optional marketing choice are separate controls. The distinction is about purpose: storing a quiz and sending its summary is not the same request as subscribing to future messages.

This article describes src/pages/Quiz.tsx and shared/quiz-summary.mjs at commit 015c7c1926731bfadfa6ede67d0e0b9f401f9674. It does not certify legal compliance, test a live consent record or claim that the preview has been deployed.

Read the first choice on its own

The preview's saving control explains that contact details and health answers will be stored and that the summary email can reveal health-related topics to anyone who can read the inbox. The save button requires that choice in the checked code.

The separate updates control is optional and starts unchecked. It explains that updates require confirmation and says health answers will not be used to target those messages in the described implementation.

The person can also choose the local-result route without saving. This makes three concepts visible: reading locally, saving and emailing, and requesting updates. They should not be collapsed into one generic “continue” decision in a personal summary.

Before providing an address, consider who can access that inbox. A shared family or work inbox can have readers beyond the person answering the quiz.

General consent principles are not a product audit

The ICO valid-consent guidance describes the importance of specific, informed choices and appropriate separation of purposes. It gives context for why two requests should be read separately.

The ICO consent-recording guidance discusses keeping evidence of what a person was told and when they agreed. A visible checkbox is not, by itself, evidence that every server-side and organisational obligation has been satisfied.

The ICO special-category conditions guidance provides context for additional care with sensitive information. We are not selecting a lawful basis for a reader or declaring this product compliant.

ICO notes that parts of its guidance are under review following legislative changes. These sources were checked on 4 October 2026; this article is a practical explanation of preview controls, not legal advice.

A hypothetical preference

Imagine someone wants to keep a quiz summary by email but does not want future promotional messages. This is an editorial example, not a recorded customer preference.

In the checked preview, they would consider the saving consent independently and leave the optional updates control unchecked. Reading the summary does not require them to request marketing messages.

Another person might want only the local educational screen. They would use the local-result option instead of treating the saving checkbox as unavoidable.

A third person might request updates. That choice still does not mean the quiz can diagnose them, use their answers as a genetic test or give treatment instructions. Communication preference and clinical capability are different matters.

Retaking is not withdrawing every permission

The preview's retake action clears the local quiz copy. It is not a substitute for a service-data deletion request or a communication-preference process.

The saving text supplies a privacy contact for withdrawal or deletion questions. Use the current release's contact and privacy information rather than assuming that closing the page reverses a completed save.

Similarly, a restored session should not be treated as a fresh consent action. In the checked code, the stored answers and receipt information do not automatically tick the saving or marketing controls on restoration.

This article has not verified how a deployed service handles a particular request. Keep any confirmation you receive and distinguish a request being sent from it being completed.

What you can do with this

Before saving in a release containing these controls, read each purpose separately. Decide whether the inbox is appropriate, whether you want the quiz stored and whether you want future updates. Do not tick an optional box simply because it appears beside a required saving choice.

If a control is unclear, ask a general question without sending health answers publicly. Preserve the wording and date if you need to discuss a saved preference later.

The public quiz route is not evidence that this preview is deployed. Check the actual release, its controls and current privacy information before deciding.
